Jim walked up and said, “When do we start?”

He dominated the trials, even in events for which he’d barely been prepared by his coach. When it was time for the javelin throw, for instance, he just picked the thing up and tossed it. It wasn’t until he watched other athletes that he realized you were allowed to take a running start.

“He did everything wrong,” a runner named Abel Kiviat later said of Thorpe’s technique in the shot put. “His stance, his footwork, his follow-through. It was all backward. Warner never taught him a thing.” Thorpe won the event anyway. “That is when I knew he was a marvel,” Kiviat said. “He was beating all these guys—and they were doing it right.”
